- American writer; jazz critic first (editor of *Metronome* 1943-55, *DownBeat* 1955-58;
biographies of Duke Ellington, a history of jazz). Converted to Catholicism 1951; turned to
religion & psychology in the last 20 years of his life, publishing 10+ books with his
**second wife, Ann Belford Ulanov**.
- First wife: Joan Bel Geddes. Died of colorectal cancer 2000-04-30, aged 82.
